UAE markets 13 Oct 2008

UAE market news & discussions for 13 October 2008

Stocks soared in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi today with limit up trading for the majority of stocks (the DFM temporary limit on the limit was raised back to 15%) and no sellers in the queue for many stocks keeping a lid on the turnover - AED 534m for the ADX which rose 6.9% to 3350, and AED 1.8 billion for the DFM, which rose 10.5% to 3344. On the DIFX by 14:30 UAE time, DP World has jumped 17.8% to $0.53, KHI is down almost 10%, GFI is up 4.5%, and the newly listed CSR has seen one small trade at $10.26. Governments around the world are backing up bank deposits and offering to supply a flood of dollars, which promted big gains in European and Asian stocks this morning. US stock futures are also up indicating Wall Street will open higher this evening (UAE time) to start the trading week on a positive (or perhaps we should be a bit more realistic and say "less disastrous") note.

Moody's was a bit moody on Dubai's government borrowing levels, saying its "susceptibility toward execution, financing and geopolitical risks will be at its most pronounced" for the next few years.

UAE financial news - latest news from Reuters, Bloomberg and UAE media

Dubai Financial Market

A staggering 23 stocks ended the day with queues of buyers ready to snap up any offers at 15% limit up prices, including all the actively traded stocks, and all of them had average increases of over 14% for the day. If that's a dead cat bounce, then it's a pussy that might even leave Mrs Slocombe lost for words. Of the 6 stocks that rose by less than 14%, only Emirates NBD (ENBD) saw significant levels of trading - and a massive AED 76m to boot, but it rose only 2%. Two stocks fell, NCC and GRAND, on little turnover.

Abu Dhabi Securities Market

Abu Dhabi had a grand total of 34 stocks trading at 10% limit up prices by the end of the session, with no sellers in the queue for 30 of them, including all the actively traded stocks, except for ARKAN which could only manage a relatively dismal 3.5% average increase for the day. There was only a single loser, Abu Dhabi ShipBuilding (ADSB), on low turnover.
