UAE markets 31 Mar 2009

UAE market news & discussions for 31 March 2009

Unsurprisingly, after yesterday's rout on the US markets, the local markets had another tumble. The Abu Dhabi ADX saw a hefty 1.8% fall to 2488 points with turnover increased to AED 207m, the index dragged down by a fall in Etisalat and bank stocks. In Dubai, the DFM fell 0.63% to 1568 points with turnover pushed up to AED 619m by heavy trading in Salama Insurance and Air Arabia. On the Nasdaq Dubai as of 16:00 UAE time, DP World is down 4% (or $0.01), Depa is up 2.8%, and there have been a handful of derivative trades - DP World down 4%, Air Arabia up 2.1%, and Aldar up 1.9%.

Dubai Financial Market

Islamic Arab Insurance (IAIC) was top of the turnover list in Dubai with AED 138m worth of turnover, and 10% limit down trading at 0.81 with no buyers in the queue, a sharp turnaround after the big gains earlier this week. Air Arabia (AIRARABIA) also cracked AED 100m worth of deals but was unchanged at 1.06. Other heavily traded stocks included Union Properties (UPP) down 4% and Deyaar Development (DEYAAR) up 5.9%. Deyaar was also the best of the 5 gainers, and only one of two to trade more than AED 1m - the other was Al Sagr National Insurance (ASNIC) with a rise of just 0.44%. Most of the actively traded stocks fell, or were unchanged, including National General Cooling (TABREED) down 3.3%, Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) 1.8%, and Emaar Properties (EMAAR) unchanged at 2.20.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

The top gainer and top traded stock in Abu Dhabi was Commercial Bank International (CBI) with 10% limit up trading at 1.54 from AED 46m worth of shares and just 7 deals. As noted, Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT) with a steep 4% fall to 13.00 and heavy trading dragged down the ADX index. Other stocks closing at 10% limit up prices included National Bank Of Ras Al Khaimah (RAKBANK), Ras Al Khaimah Properties (RAKPROP), National Marine Dredging (NMDC), and Union Cement (UCC) although only RAK Properties saw more than AED 1m worth of deals. Union Insurance (UNION) had yet another volatile day with trades at limit up and limit down prices on relatively busy volumes. National Bank of Umm Al Quwain (NBQ) was up 8.9%, Waha Capital (OILC) rose 3.75%, Abu Dhabi National Energy (TAQA) 2.05%, Aldar Properties (ALDAR) 1.5%, National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) 1.1%, and the remaining gainers rose less than 2% or on thin trading. Arkan Building Materials (ARKAN), on thin trading, and Green Crescent Insurance (GCIC) had closing trades at 10% limit down prices. Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB) and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) both fell more than 5%, Bank of Sharjah (BOS) 4.2%, First Gulf Bank (FGB) 3.7%, Aabar Energy (AABAR) 2.2% and the other losers by less than 2% or on turnover of less than AED 1m.

UAE markets 30 Mar 2009

UAE market news & discussions for 30 March 2009

After a good start to the week yesterday, both markets fell back today. The ADX in Abu Dhabi fell 0.47% to 2534 points and turnover was moderately low at AED 124m. The DFM in Dubai suffered badly with a 1.6% fall to 1578 points despite a good show by Salama Insurance, and turnover was almost half a billion dirhams. On the Nasdaq Dubai at 14:30 UAE time, DP World is down 10.7%, and there have been a couple of derivatives traded - one each for Air Arabia (unchanged) and Emaar (down 1.8%).

Dubai Financial Market

Islamic Arab Insurance (IAIC) dominated the Dubai Financial Market (DFM) floor today, with AED 150m worth of deals, a 15% limit up close at 0.90, no sellers in the queue, and the only stock trading more than AED 100m worth. Other stocks with significant activity included Union Properties (UPP) with a decent 4.2% rise to 0.75 (and the second highest increase of the actively traded stocks), Air Arabia (AIRARABIA) down 0.93%, and Emaar Properties (EMAAR) down 3.9%. National General Cooling (TABREED) was the only other gainer of note, up by 3.45%. Gulf Navigation (GULFNAV) and Deyaar Development (DEYAAR) were unchanged, Dubai Financial Market (DFM), Drake & Scull (DSI), Arabtec (ARTC), Ajman Islamic Bank (AJMANBANK), and Arab International Logistics (ARMX) all fell about 3%, and the remainder fell less than 2% or on thin trading.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

In Abu Dhabi, Green Crescent Insurance (GCIC) was the most actively traded stock, plummeting just over 10% to 1.23. Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT) was relatively busy and edged up by just 0.36% to 13.90, saving the index from a drop more representative of the number of falling stocks today. Invest Bank (INVESTB) and Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADAVIATION) were 10% limit up but from just one small trade each. Union Insurance (UNION) had an unusual 10% limit up and down day today - with an overall 6.5% gain but last trade going through 10% limit down at 3.74. Bank of Sharjah (BOS) was up 5%, Waha Capital (OILC) 1.3% and the remaining handful of gainers up less than 1% or on thin trading. Gulf Pharmaceutical Industries (JULPHAR) saw some increased activity, and a 6.5% fall to 1.45, Aldar Properties (ALDAR) dropped by 4.4%, Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) 3.9%, First Gulf Bank (FGB) 3%, and the remainder by less than 2% or on thin trading.

UAE markets 26 Mar 2009

UAE market news & discussions for 26 March 2009

The week ended with UAE markets slightly down, both ADX and DFM falling by 0.16% to 2533 and 1588 points respectively. On the bright side, turnover was low with only AED 267m in Dubai and AED 112m in Abu Dhabi - taking off the AED 264m for the newly listed Green Crescent Insurance (GCIC) which obviously distorts the trading volumes. GCIC volumes will not stay at those high levels. On the subject of GCIC, it shot up from IPO price of 1.00 to 1.70 in early trading before falling back to between 1.20 and 1.40 for most of the day, with last trade going through at 1.40.

Dubai Financial Market

In Dubai there was little to cheer about with most actively traded stocks falling 0-2% including 1.7% for Emaar Properties (EMAAR) and Arabtec (ARTC), and 0.4% for Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB), three of the top 4 stocks by turnover. Dubai Financial Market (DFM) was the other one but closed unchanged at 1.28. Air Arabia (AIRARABIA) was about the only gainer on busy trading, up by 1% to 1.04. Emirates NBD (ENBD) also rose 1% which kept the index from falling deeper into the red, but on thin turnover. Drake & Scull (DSI), Deyaar Development (DEYAAR), Gulf Navigation (GULFNAV), National General Cooling (TABREED), and Union Properties (UPP) all closed unchanged from yesterday.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

Apart from the big trading in Green Crescent Insurance (GCIC), there were few gainers of note. Abu Dhabi National Energy (TAQA) was up just 1.1% on busy trading, Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT) kept the index up with a 0.74% rise, and Sudan Telecom (SUDATEL) was the only other gainer on more than AED 1m worth of deals, rising 3% to 5.49. Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) was the worst of the more active losers, falling 5.5% to 2.38, while the other big property company, Aldar Properties (ALDAR), only fell 0.71%. Arkan Building Materials (ARKAN) fell 4.65% on limited volumes, Dana Gas (DANA) 3.2%, and the remaining losers were down by less than 3% or on thin trading.
