UAE market news & discussions for 23 February 2009

Dubai Financial Market

The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) could stand for Dubai's Flying Moggy. After 10% limit down for several stocks yesterday, there were 7 stocks trading 15% limit up by the close of trading today as the roller coaster ride continues. The $10 billion UAE Central Bank loan to the Dubai government announced yesterday was obviously seen as a good thing by the market. The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) index overall was up a substantial 7.9% with turnover down a bit from yesterday but still impressive at AED 1.2 billion from 930m shares traded. Dubai Financial Market (DFM), Emaar Properties (EMAAR), Arabtec (ARTC), and Air Arabia (AIRARABIA) were all heavily traded and 15% up at close with no sellers to be seen on the trading floor. Most other actively traded stocks saw gains of more than 10%. Emirates Integrated Telecommunications (DU) was up only 5% but that was due to a lower cap on daily increase. Only three stocks fell - Arab Insurance Group (ARIG), National Cement Company (NCC), and Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) - with total trading between them of less than AED 250k.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

In Abu Dhabi, the index was up 1.1% to 2299 points from AED 340m worth of turnover and 212m shares. Six stocks were trading 10% limit up by the end of the session including Aldar Properties (ALDAR), Dana Gas (DANA) and Ras Al Khaimah Cement (RAKCC) on heavy trading, and Union National Bank (UNB) and Bank of Sharjah (BOS) in the bank sector. Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) was slightly off a 10% rise at closing but was the most heavily traded stock. Most other more actively traded stocks saw gains of more than 5% today. Of the 7 losers, Commercial Bank International (CBI) was down 8.7% and the most heavily traded loser, and Qatar Telecom (QTEL) and Arkan Building Materials (ARKAN) were the only other losers trading more than AED 1m, both falling less than 1%.

Other market news

  • The biggest news affecting the markets was obviously the Dubai bailout ... er ... loan ... er bond issue of $20 billion, half of which the UAE Central Bank has said they will subscribe to. Who else will buy the other $10 billion is unknown as yet.
  • Bank of Sharjah announced a full year net profit increase of 2% to AED 404m, which by our calculations resulted in a Q4 profit of AED 70m, down 56% from the same quarter in 2007, and down 52% from the third quarter of 2008. Nevertheless, their shares were 10% limit up today, after a short trading suspension due to releasing results after the market opened in Abu Dhabi.
  • Dana Gas found another 100 billion cubic feet of gas in Egypt and their shares were also 10% limit up.
  • Emaar, in reply to a DFM request apparently, said the JL Homes Chapter 11 filing "does not have any significant impact" on their financial statements for 2009 Q1.
  • Al Salam Bank Bahrain AGM yesterday approved a 10% cash dividend. SALAM_BAH has a secondary listing on the DFM and shares rose 1.15% (the smallest gain today).
  • The Abu Dhabi stock market announced they'd signed an agreement with Reuters to improve investor relations in the UAE. Investors' relatives will no doubt be waiting with excitement for the details of how this will benefit them.
  • Etisalat BOD were meeting today to discuss dividends for 2008. No information supplied yet.
  • Dubai Islamic Bank and Union Properties BOD meet tomorrow so 08 FY results might be seen tomorrow afternoon for those companies.

UAE market news & discussions for 22 February 2009

Dubai Financial Market

An interesting day, to say the least, in Dubai with sharp early gains on heavy trading, turning into a substantial selloff in the last hour of trading and many stocks ending 10% limit down for the day. The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) index was down 4.3% to 1532 points from just over a massive one billion shares traded worth AED 1.5 billion. Some sort of record given the low prices that shares are trading at. Dubai Financial Market (DFM), Arabtec (ARTC), and Emaar Properties (EMAAR) all traded over 300m worth and 10% limit down. Other limit down stocks included Union Properties (UPP), Dubai Investment Company (DIC), Ajman Islamic Bank (AJMANBANK), Islamic Arab Insurance (IAIC), Emarat Takaful Insurance (TAKAFUL-EM), Emirates Integrated Telecommunications (DU), and the rarely traded International Financial Advisers (IFA). Most other stocks had overall falls of more than 5%. Al Sagr National Insurance (ASNIC) was the only gainer of note, rising 4.2% on heavy insider trading yet again.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

In Abu Dhabi, the ADX went the other way, with a 1.1% rise to 2275 points albeit on the back of much lower turnover of AED 251m from 138m shares. Aldar Properties (ALDAR) and Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) were the most heavily traded stocks but saw little change in price. Ras Al Khaimah Cement (RAKCC) was in third place on turnover and rose a solid 7.1% after the AGM approved an 11% cash dividend. The rarely traded Al Buhaira National Insurance (ABNIC) stood out with two large trades worth AED 17.5m but price unchanged at 10.30. Qatar Telecom (QTEL) up 3.3%, Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT) up 2%, and National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) up 1.4% helped prop up the market and the other big Abu Dhabi banks saw gains of 1%-3%. Of the 10 losers, only two were on trading of more than AED 1m - Waha Capital (OILC) falling 3.9% and Sudan Telecom (SUDATEL) down 2.65%.

On the Nasdaq Dubai, a quiet day so far (as of 4pm) with DP World the only stock to trade and price unchanged at $0.22.

  • On Thursday, news emerged that the John Laing Homes subsidiary of Emaar properties had filed for bankruptcy protection in the USA. Emaar paid AED 3.8 billion for JL Homes in June 2006 and in 20088 Q3 and Q4 wrote off about AED 2.7 billion attributable to the US subsidiary. Emaar shares were 10% limit down on the DFM today but as there was an early gain of about 5% it seems unlikely the bankruptcy news prompted the sell off. An Emaar statement was posted on the DFM today, 3 days after the news release.
  • The DFM announced their 2009 annual stock game which begins in April and lasts for a month. The DFM index fell 4.3% today although the two events are probably not connected.
  • The Aramex board of directors (BOD) will meet on Wednesday 25 February 2009 to discuss possible dividends and whether to allow GCC nationals to own up to 51% of the company's share capital.
  • The Tabreed board of directors proposed no dividends for 2008 FY.
  • RAK Cement AGM approved an 11% cash dividend (about an 8%-9% yield on current share price) with ex-dividend date 26 February 2009 (information not confirmed).
  • UAE fourth quarter results - table of financial results so far, with dividend and AGM information

UAE markets 19 Feb 2009

UAE market news & discussions for 19 February 2009

Stocks in Dubai soared 5.4% overall on news of Borse Dubai getting its loan renewed, with the index rising to 1601 points on very heavy trading of AED 1.15 billion turnover from 846m shares. A massive amount, considering the low prices most stocks are trading at. Abu Dhabi was not too shabby either, rising 2.1% to 2250 points with turnover of AED 291m from 153m shares. Union Properties and Dubai Islamic Bank announced BOD meetings for 24 February 2009, which should mean 2008 FY results will be announced about then. Sorouh announced a proposed cash dividend of 12% and shares gained 3.2% to 2.30. On the Nasdaq Dubai, DP World is up 4.8%, Depa down 2.5%, and Boulder Steel up a massive 33% but that's just $0.01 to $0.04 and from one small trade. Results released today for Dubai Islamic Insurance (AMAN), yesterday for National Bank of Umm Al Quwain (NBQ).

Dubai Financial Market

In Dubai, Emaar Properties (EMAAR) (2.09), Arabtec (ARTC) (1.88), and Dubai Financial Market (DFM) (1.42) all soared by more than 10% with DFM closing 15% limit up, and all three stocks traded in excess of AED 200m each. Dubai Investment Company (DIC) also rose more than 10% and was the only other stock to trade more than AED 100m worth. Other stocks rising more than 10% included Gulf General Investment (GGICO), Ektitab Holding (EKTTITAB), Union Properties (UPP), and Dar Takaful Insurance (DARTAKAFUL). Most other stocks rose more than 4%, although Air Arabia (AIRARABIA) and Shuaa Capital (SHUAA) were up by just 1.1% and 2.2% respectively. There were only 3 losers, none on trading levels of any note, and Emirates NBD (ENBD) was unchanged at 3.20 on low volumes.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

Aldar Properties (ALDAR) and Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) topped the turnover list in Abu Dhabi as usual, with gains of 5.45% and 3.2% respectively. Fujairah National Bank (NBF) stood out with AED 36m worth of turnover but that was from just 4 trades, and price was almost unchanged at 8.17. United Arab Bank (UAB) was another rare standout in the volume charts with AED 29m worth of shares traded from just 1 deal and price unchanged at 8.41. A total of seven stocks were trading 10% limit up by the end of the session with no sellers in the queue, including Abu Dhabi National Energy (TAQA), Finance House (FH), Union National Bank (UNB), Aabar Energy (AABAR), Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), International Fish Farming (ASMAK), and Waha Capital (OILC). Most other stocks gained less than 5% including Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT), up just 1%. There were 8 losers but none on any turnover of more than AED 1m except for National Bank of Fujairah's 0.12% drop.
