UAE markets 31 Dec 2008

UAE market news & discussions for 31 December 2008

Today is the last day of the financial year for most UAE companies, and the last day of trading for UAE stockmarkets. What a relief that's over. The DFM index closed down 0.19% at 1636 points after two days of gains, with turnover also down at AED 217m from 158m shares. The ADX index continued the gains this week and rose another 1.5% to 2390 points with turnover of AED 156m from 72m shares. The really bad news is that the DFM index has fallen 72% from the 5931 point close 12 months ago, and the ADX index has fallen 47% from the 4551 point close on 31 December 2007. Surely 2009 has got to see something better than that? On the Nasdaq Dubai, DP World shares are up 5.3% to $0.40, and Depa are down 3.9% to $0.49 as of 15:00 UAE time. UAE markets will be closed tomorrow and reopen on Sunday 04 January 2009. European and Asian stocks are up on the last day of the year, and US stock futures were mixed ahead of the last day of trading for 2008 on Wall Street.

First Gulf Bank blamed foreign speculators for their falling share price and cut the foreign ownership limit in half. But that leaves us wondering who Abu Dhabi Aviation, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Etisalat and Taqa can blame for their falling share price, given that no foreign ownership in those companies is allowed. Aabar continued to invest in anything except energy, this time buying a stake in an Italian toll road owner. Arabtec shares went ex-dividend today. Emaar made some new years resolutions for 2009 but their shares fell anyway.

Dubai Financial Market

Emaar Properties (EMAAR) was back at the top of the list of stocks on turnover but still only saw AED 84m worth of trading, and fell 3% to 2.26. Dubai Financial Market (DFM) shares were busy again, falling 2.3% to 1.25. Arabtec (ARTC) was also active but reversed previous gains, dropping slightly by 0.44% to 2.26 after going ex-dividend today, with price restated from yesterday's close. Shuaa Capital (SHUAA) was near the top of the gainers list with a 5.3% rise to 1.00 but from low trading levels. Emirates NBD (ENBD) rose 4.8%, on even lower turnover. Gulf General Investment (GGICO) saw more activity than either of them and rose 3.0% to 5.45. Air Arabia (AIRARABIA) and Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) were the only other two gainers of any note, rising 2.3% and 0.6% respectively. Union Properties (UPP) stood out in the loser's list with 10% limit down trading at 0.72 and no buyers in the queue. Global Investment House (GLOBAL) was also limit down but only saw 1 trade today. National General Cooling (TABREED) fell 5.5%, Gulf Navigation (GULFNAV) 4.5%, Ajman Islamic Bank (AJMANBANK) 4.3%, and after Emaar and Dfm, another 6 stocks fell less than 2%.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

Arkan Building Materials (ARKAN) dominated trading in Abu Dhabi with AED35m worth of trading and a 3.3% gain to 6.29. Surely it's about time we had another disclosure from Arkan denying any knowledge of information that would explain the excessive interest in their shares? Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) and Aldar Properties (ALDAR) were also busy, rising 2.2% to 3.20, and falling 1.2% to 3.90 respectively. The bank sector was looking good with First Gulf Bank (FGB) rising 4% to 9.02, Union National Bank (UNB), Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), and National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) soaring 10% limit up to 2.22, 1.78, and 8.95 respectively. Most other bank stocks saw good gains, although on lower trading levels. Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT) was unchanged at 9.86. In the loser's list, Aabar Energy (AABAR) fell 3.8% to 1.81, Waha Capital (OILC) was down 1.8%, Dana Gas (DANA) 1.7%, and the remainder by less than 1.5% or on thin trading.

Dubai Financial Market

Dubai Financial Market (DFM) was at the top of the traded value list for a change, with AED 125m worth of deals and a 4.1% increase to 1.28, perhaps reflecting the increasing trading volumes on the stock market recently which would result in more revenue. Emaar Properties (EMAAR) was in second place on turnover and the only other stock with more than AED 100m worth of deals as it edged down by 0.43% to 2.33. Arabtec (ARTC) pulled back 1.1% to 4.53 ahead of going ex-dividend tomorrow. Emirates NBD (ENBD) was the best gainer with 5% limit up trading at 2.91 on low volumes, Shuaa Capital (SHUAA) also looked good with a 4.4% gain but also on thin trading, Gulf Navigation (GULFNAV) was up 3.1%, and another 5 gainers rose less than 2.5%. Arab International Logistics (ARMX) was the worst of the more actively traded losers, falling 6.4% to 0.88, National General Cooling (TABREED) was down 3.5% and the remainder fell less than 1.5% or on very light trading, including the two limit down stocks.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

Aldar Properties (ALDAR) up 1.5% to 4.00, and First Gulf Bank (FGB) up 3.0% to 9.00, were the two most actively traded stocks in Abu Dhabi but even so, neither saw more than AED 20m worth of deals. Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT) was third by traded value and rose 1.4% to 9.89. Five stocks closed at 10% limit up with no sellers in the queue, including Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), Agthia Group (AGTHIA), and Ras Al Khaimah Properties (RAKPROP). Other gainers included Union National Bank (UNB) up 9.2%, Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) and Dana Gas (DANA) both up more than 5%, Aabar Energy (AABAR) and Abu Dhabi National Energy (TAQA) up more than 3% making it a good day for the energy sector, and the remaining gainers up less than 3% or on thin trading. Out of 8 losers, only International Fish Farming (ASMAK) and National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) fell on more than AED 1m worth of trading, both stocks edging down by less than 0.5%.

UAE markets 29 Dec 2008

UAE market news & discussions for 29 December 2008

A short trading week this week with two New Year holidays at each end. Both local markets saw a decent bit of green today with the DFMGI up 2.9% to 1633 points and turnover also up to AED 297m from 200m shares. The ADX was up 1.6% to 2319 points with turnover at AED 157m from 77m shares. Big gains for Arabtec ahead of the last trading day for bonus share eligibility tomorrow, First Gulf Bank (buying back more shares again today), and Union Properties. Asian and European stocks are up, as are US stock futures, and the oil price.

Dubai Financial Market

As ever, Emaar Properties (EMAAR) was the most heavily traded stock by value, just shy of AED 100m worth as it gained 5.9% to close at 2.34. Arabtec (ARTC) was in second place on turnover with 15% limit up trading at 4.58. Dubai Financial Market (DFM) shares were also busy and rose 7.9% to 1.23. Union Properties (UPP) joined Arabtec at the top of the gainers list, also with 15% limit up trading at 0.80. Almost all other shares saw good gains of 3%-6% today, only Ektitab Holding (EKTTITAB) with one smal trade, and National General Cooling (TABREED) falling 1.7%, in the losers list.

Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange

First Gulf Bank (FGB) topped both the turnover list with AED 37m worth of deals, and the gainers list with 10% limit up trading at 8.56. Arkan Building Materials (ARKAN) was in second spot by turnover but moved up by just 0.34% to 5.79. Aldar Properties (ALDAR), Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH), and Aabar Energy (AABAR) all surged ahead by 6%-8%, and most other stocks rose less than 3%. Emirates Telecom (ETISALAT) was up just 0.82% to 9.69. National Marine Dredging (NMDC) stood out in the losers list with an 8% fall to 8.35 and much heavier than usual trading activity. Ras Al Khaimah Properties (RAKPROP) was the only other stock in the red on turnover greater than AED 1m, falling 4% to 0.48.
