UAE markets 30 Aug 2007

UAE market news & discussions for 30 August 2007

The DFM rose slightly on reasonable trading levels, led by DFM's own shares which seems an unlikely reaction to the news that the Swedish National Economic Crimes Bureau (Ekobrottsmyndigheten in Swedish - there's one for the next spelling bee), was considering an investigation into Borse Dubai's bid for the OMX. The ADSM barely moved on lowish trading volumes.

A new law was announced in the UAE allowing family run companies to go public but retain a majority stake. The minimum offer requirement was reduced from 55% to 30% of the company. Forsyth, who had their licences revoked by the DFSA this week, was issued with non-operational licences for the DIFC. Kingdom Hotel Investments (listed on the DIFX) announced a 39% fall in profits for 2007 H1.

There was news of the construction of an AED 4.4 billion city in Malaysia with several UAE companies involved, including Aldar Properties (there share price was up today). Deyaar announced an AED 2 billion development in the IMPZ area of Dubai, and Nakheel announced a 4000 villa project called Al Furjan in Dubai.

UAE markets 27 Aug 2007

UAE market news & discussions for 27 August 2007

After two trading days of gains, the DFM couldn't sustain the rise and dropped back, while ADSM continued to rise with Aabar Petroleum and Aldar Properties leading the way after the Aldar CFO said their share price was worth twice its current market value. Perhaps Mr Jain, the CFO from Emaar, could try the same trick. Aldar did also have some help from a Deutsche Bank BUY rating though.

DFM announced a trip to New York for November 2007 with a bunch of listed friends including Emaar and Air Arabia. It is unknown yet, which airline will take them there.

Moody's either changed their mind or did a very quick evaluation of Emaar, but either way, said Emaar's rating wouldn't change after the cancellation of the Dubai Holding deal.

Arabtec said there was no Meydan racecourse deal yet. Oman Insurance said they were looking at the Saudi market. Tamweel said they were the first escrow agent to be appointed by the Dubai Land Department. Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and Commercial Bank of Dubai announced some new senior appointments. Forsyth had their DIFC license withdrawn by the DFSA.

The latest Borse Dubai news today is a report that they may buy Nasdaq's stake in the LSE, then team up with Nasdaq to buy a stake in the OMX. There was also a report that Borse Dubai may consider paying 50% more than Nasdaq for the OMX stake.

A fall of 0.9% to 4246 for the DFMGI was unsurprising, given the excitement yesterday and Thursday. Did anyone say "booking profits" yet? Turnover today at 709m dhs was about half of yesterday's.

Only NCC and Arab Insurance Group (ARIG) rose today, on very low traded value.

Emaar Properties PJSC (EMAAR) saw the highest turnover with 255m dhs worth of trading and a fall of 1.4% to 10.85, while DFM also saw heavy trading and a 1.65% fall to 2.98.

Biggest fall of 2.7% was from AMAN but from low volume. Amlak Finance Company (AMLAK) lost 1.85% to close at 3.19 and the remainder fell by about 1.5% or less.

Abu Dhabi Securities Market

The ADSM had a small rise of 0.22% to 3436 but turnover was fairly decent at 560m dhs. Over a third from Aldar Properties PJSC (ALDAR), up 2.9% to 6.90.

Aabar Petroleum Investments Company PJSC (AABAR) topped the list of rises (ignoring low volume stocks) with a 3.4% jump to 3.71 and 76m dhs worth of turnover.

Other rises for Ras Al Khaimah White Cement Company (RAKWCT) up 2.4%, Commercial Bank International (CBI) up 1.8%, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) up 0.7%, Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) up 0.7%. Emirates Telecommunications Company (ETISALAT) was up just 0.3%.

DRIVE fell 5.5% from turnover of less than 200,000 dhs, the other big losers traded on barely noticeable turnover of less than 20,000 dhs.

Dana Gas PJSC (DANA), ARKAN, Oasis International Leasing Company PJSC (OILC), all fell about 0.6% from traded volume of more than 10m dhs each.

UAE markets 23 Aug 2007

UAE market news & discussions for 23 August 2007

The local press this morning carried front page headlines of yesterday's nose-dive on the markets which perhaps prompted a rush to buy shares today. Both ADSM and DFM recovered, and then some, with a cracking 4.5% rise for the DFM index on solid volumes.

The Swedish financial regulator said Dubai Borse broke Swedish law with their takeover bid for the OMX and set an interesting precedent for lawbreakers in Sweden by not punishing Borse Dubai. In contrast to the Dubai financial regulator which threatened Forsyth Partners with a shutdown yesterday. Dubai Aerospace said they were going to buy 125 planes and prompted comments of a possible IPO.

Taqa announced the 2 billion dh purchase of a Canadian energy unit. Aldar Properties started handing out Al Raha Gardens homes. Moody's and S&P may review their ratings of Emaar if the Dubai Holding deal doesn't go through. DFM were let off the hook in court yesterday for freezing an investor's assets. And IAIC Salama bought back another 4.4m shares yesterday.

UAE markets 22 Aug 2007

UAE market news & discussions for 22 August 2007

There seems to be no reprieve to the local share slump with both markets falling today. Both Emaar and the DFMGI dropping below the important levels of 10 dhs per share and 4000 points. It looks like Emaar got hammered after yesterday's conference call in which the CFO said Q3 profits were expected to be 'extremely marginal'.

Deyaar would list on DFM 05 Sep 2007 said Shuaa. Etisalat is one of ten selected bidders for a 26% share of Kuwait's new mobile phone operator according to MEED, in an apparent contradiction to reports that the Kuwait government were excluding foreign companies from the auction. National Bank of Abu Dhabi said they were shifting funds into Saudi equities because they looked cheap. At just over 20, the Saudi PE (average) appears to be the highest in the region. NBAD also announced an EGM to vote on selling AED 6.4 bn worth of bonds. Emirates Driving Company said they received ISO 9001-2000 certification. IAIC Salama bought back 1m of their own shares yesterday.

Ras Al Khaimah announced commercial licences in some categories would allow 100% foreign ownership from 01 Sep 2007. The DFSA ordered Forsyth Partners to cease activities in the DIFC. The Swedish financial regulator may issue a ruling on Borse Dubai's OMX bid after reviewing their answers to questions posed last week. Dubai World is reported to have gone to Las Vegas with AED 18 bn to buy 9.5% of MGM. And Dubai Aerospace denied it was bidding for London's Gatwick airport.

The DFMGI got whacked by almost 2.5% today, on hectic turnover of 1.1 bn dhs and closing at 3968 points. Emaar Properties PJSC (EMAAR) suffered badly, accounting for about half the total turnover and a 3.5% fall to below 10 dhs, down to 9.75 dhs per share, a level not seen since the end of 2004.

National General Cooling Company PJSC (TABREED) was down 3.3%, AIRARABIA fell 2.5% on busy trading. Dubai Investments PJSC (DIC) and Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) fell about 3% each on moderate trading, while GULFNAV, Arabtec Holding PJSC (ARTC), Aramex PJSC (ARMX) and Shuaa Capital PJSC (SHUAA) all fell about 1-1.5%.

Biggest rise was for Islamic Arab Insurance Company PSC (IAIC), up 1% to 3.06. Emirates Bank International Group (EBI) and National Bank of Dubai (NBD) rose about half a percent on limited volumes.

Abu Dhabi Securities Market

The Abu Dhabi index sunk by almost 2% on moderate turnover of 307m dhs with only two stocks rising on trading volumes of more than 1m dhs worth - ABNIC up 4% to 7.80, and Ras Al Khaimah White Cement Company (RAKWCT) up just 0.5% to 2.05.

Aldar Properties PJSC (ALDAR) plummeted 5.1% to 6.04 and was at the top of the traded value list with 98m dhs of turnover. Other sharp falls for Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) down 4.35%, Ras Al Khaimah Properties PJSC (RAKPROP) down 4.3%, ARKAN down 3.6%, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) down 3.3% and National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) down 3.2%.

UAE markets 20 Aug 2007

UAE market news & discussions for 20 August 2007

Both UAE markets got off to an encouraging start this morning but ended up down for the day on low volumes, while world markets have shown solid increases so far today. The respective heads of Borse Dubai and Nasdaq both said their offers for OMX were more attractive, and criticised the other offer.

Emaar Properties announced some new buildings in Dubai and said their Marassi development in Egypt was splendid. The DFM said Air Arabia had been added to the transport index leaving us wondering why it wasn't already. And the UAE Ministry of Economy released a report saying UAE insurance companies premiums were up by 30% in 2006, which makes their losses for the year look even worse.

The DFMGI fell almost 0.5% to 4122 with turnover a moderate 581m dhs. Emaar Properties PJSC (EMAAR) was the top traded stock by volume with 208m dhs worth of trading and a 0.5% fall to 10.25.

Not much in the way of good news today, although Arab Insurance Group (ARIG) stood out with a 2.9% rise to 3.20 from more than usual trading. Shuaa Capital PJSC (SHUAA) up 1% and National General Cooling Company PJSC (TABREED) up 0.4% were the only stocks from the actively traded list showing an increase.

DFM shares were the worst performing today, out of the active stocks list, down by 1.75% to 2.81. AMAN and Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) fell about 1.5% and the remainder fell less than 1%, except for AIRARABIA, GULFNAV and Union Properties PJSC (UPP) which were unchanged.

Abu Dhabi Securities Market

ADSM fell by just 0.15% to 3401 points from a lowish turnover of 248m dhs. Trading once again overwhelmingly dominated by Oasis International Leasing Company PJSC (OILC) with 103m dhs of turnover and a 1.7% fall to 1.69.

Rises of note for NBS up 3.2% to 2.95 and Bank Of Sharjah (BOS) up 3.1% to 2.95. Emirates Telecommunications Company (ETISALAT) was up 0.9% and the remainder rose less than 1% or on low volumes.

A bad day for TKFL which plummeted 9.5% to 4.65 from greater than usual trading, probably limited by the lack of interested buyers. There were nasty hits of 6.6% for National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) and 3.8% for DRIVE. Union National Bank (UNB) didn't look too healthy either, down by 2% to 7.21. Ras Al Khaimah Cement Company (RAKCC), Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), Aldar Properties PJSC (ALDAR), Aabar Petroleum Investments Company PJSC (AABAR) and AGTHIA all fell by a little over 1% and the remaining stocks fell less than 1% or on turnover less than 1m dhs.

UAE markets 19 Aug 2007

UAE market news & discussions for 19 August 2007

The week kicks off on a sour note with both UAE markets falling on moderate trading volumes, despite the US stock markets ending last week on an encouraging note. Oasis Leasing stood out today with a decent rise and making it to the top of the traded value charts, ahead of Emaar which tanked again and is getting uncomfortably close to that cliff edge of 10 dhs per share. At the other end of the volume scale, we saw Al Ain Ahlia Insurance Company going almost limit up with a single trade of just 3 shares.

Dubai Financial Market announced an invisible report that congratulated all their listed companies for handing in results on time. Shuaa released a visible report on Amlak Finance [SELL] and Tamweel [NEUTRAL]. Borse Dubai, OMX and Nasdaq had a fun weekend with Borse Dubai announcing their offer for OMX, and NASDAQ telling OMX shareholders that their already tabled (and lower) offer was better.

Dubai Financial Market

It was an unpleasant day for the DFMGI with a drop of 1.35%, closing at 4141 points from turnover of 860m dhs.

Only two stocks rose today, Arabtec Holding PJSC (ARTC) up 1.2% to 5.82 and Shuaa Capital PJSC (SHUAA) up 0.2% to 5.00. Both on thin trading.

Of the stocks trading significant volumes, Amlak Finance Company (AMLAK) was the hardest hit, down by 3.4% to 3.10, with Tamweel PJSC (TAMWEEL) a little way behind, dropping by 2.25% to 3.91. It looks like a few people were reading that Shuaa report over the weekend.

Emaar Properties PJSC (EMAAR) dropped 1.9% to 10.30 from 329m dhs worth of trading, while Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) and Union Properties PJSC (UPP) were also down about 2%. National General Cooling Company PJSC (TABREED), Dubai Investments PJSC (DIC), GULFNAV and Emirates Bank International Group (EBI) all fell about 1.5% with the remaining stocks falling by less than 1%.

Abu Dhabi Securities Market

ADSM also suffered today but less badly than DFM, yet again. The index lost 0.89% to close at 3407 with a fairly decent turnover of 671m dhs. However, over half of that was from trading in Oasis International Leasing Company PJSC (OILC) shares which closed 3% up at 1.73.

Bank Of Sharjah (BOS) stood out in the gainers list today with a 5.1% rise to 2.95 from relatively busy trading, which means their shares are up almost 20% since the beginning of this month. Other rises of 1.1% for Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), 0.6% for ARKAN, and the remaining gainers were up by less than 1% or on very low volumes.

The biggest drop on any sort of reasonable turnover was Aldar Properties PJSC (ALDAR), shedding 2.1% to close at 6.43. Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank (ADIB) and Emirates Telecommunications Company (ETISALAT) lost close to 2% each while National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD), First Gulf Bank (FGB) and Sorouh Real Estate (SOROUH) were down about 1.5% each. Other stocks lost about 1% or less, or traded less than a million dhs worth of shares.
